Buyer's Guide: Unsounded Comic

Graphic Novel Release date: Unsounded #1

Unsounded Comic is an ongoing, comic fantasy story written and drawn by Ashley Cope, who also pens the acclaimed Witchblade franchise. The series features original character designs by Ashley, along with a multitude of concepts that have been inspired from different forms of fantasy fiction. The storyline revolves around a young girl who becomes possessed by the demon lord Agrarath, which has taken control of her body. She then joins the ranks of demonic forces bent on terrorizing humanity in the Great Rift valley.

The graphic novels take place in Hyderabad, a modern industrial city situated in India's central region of Rajasthan. Hyderabad stands as one of the major metropolitan centers in India, housing the financial headquarters of Birla Group of Companies, the multinational company headed by Aditya Kumar Deo. The city has a growing economy due to various industries such as IT, BPO, petroleum and other service sectors. The city is also home to major Indian confectionary chain Haldiram's, and a plethora of malls, pubs and restaurants. Due to this cosmopolitan infrastructure and manpower base, Hyderabad is one of the fastest growing cities in India, catering to a population of more than a hundred million people.

Unsounded Comic was conceptualized when Ashley Cope saw a number of comic books sitting on a shelf. He felt that he had to create his own fictional world that would follow a similar formula to the popular comic series that he had grown up on. Unsounded Comic is the first ongoing graphic novel series from Ashley. It is written in third person narration and is presented in a high-school student's voice. As with most other comics based on true stories, Unsounded Comic follows a plot that follows the main character's gradual transformation from ordinary to super-power.

The main protagonist, Kaitlinnea "Kait" Johnson, finds herself possessed with a mysterious energy that allows her to manipulate objects with her mind. This ability allows her to manipulate objects and people with telekinesis, which earns her the nickname, Telekinetic Killer. After learning that she has this power, her best friend, Shanelah " Shantelah " Collins goes to visit her family's grave where she discovers a skull containing the skull of her late father. When Shanelah learns that her unborn baby will have the same power as her deceased father, she becomes determined to find a way to unlock the mysterious power within Kaitlinnea.

The story begins with a brief prologue introducing the main character and the status quo of the story. Then we jump straight into the action in the third person narration, following Kaitlinnea as she unleashes her psychokinetic powers and takes on an entire new world in her path. Throughout the series we learn more about Shanelah, her background, how she came to be possessed with the mysterious energy and where the reader can begin to connect the dots and make sense of this crazy story.

Unsounded Comic is a very unique comic book. The layout is very sparse, to the point that at times it doesn't feel like there's a real page to fill. There are many pages devoted to developing the mythos behind Unsounded Comic, and the introduction of her powers and her relationship with the other characters. I felt as though the brief introduction was lacking and it wasn't explained enough for me to care about what happened with Shanelah and why she got the comics. However, I understand that it might not interest some readers who aren't familiar with the Unsounded comic book series.

I enjoyed the character descriptions and the overall flow of the story. There isn't any sort of cut-out filler or meaningless scenes here, which I appreciate. This is just the first in a potential three Unsounded comic book series. I'm excited to see where writer Margret Wise Brown takes the Unsounded story. I look forward to seeing where she takes it!

Unsounded Comic has a lot to offer fans of the Unsounded comic book series, who don't want to read just the standard comic book story. This is definitely a graphic novel series worth checking out. If you love the Unsounded graphic novel series, you will love this second story by Ms. Wise Brown. It just may be the kick start readers need to continue enjoying the Unsounded story. "Unsounded" is scheduled to run until May of next year!
