'Moon's Haunted Earth' by Kevin Dunn is another of Kevin Dunn's dark urban fantasy novels. This novel starts out as a traditional murder mystery set in Chicago, Illinois. Moon, an honor student, is suspected of the murder of a fourteen year old boy. But when the murder is solved and Moon is arrested, she's taken off to serve her time at the new reformatory for women, where she'll be trained to be a crime reporter.
However, all is not what it seems. There is a serial killer who seems to be responsible for the murder, and he is just as violent with Moon as he was with the boy. The other girls in the reformatory are all too frightened to interact with Moon due to her notoriety. But then, a visitor appears... And if Moon is able to free herself from the dark grasp of this killer, she might have just enough to find out what has happened to her father and escape to Chicago once and for all...
Within a few sentences of beginning, the book begins to become dark and gory. I read it with the dark veil of a horror movie wrapped around me like a cloak. It was so intense that I could hardly breath. And then, after spending several pages trying to relax or think of a happy thought, the storyline took a sudden and violent turn. I started to feel as though I was reading about another serial killer on the loose, but this one wasn't from the city of Chicago.
But more eerie clues began to mount, pointing toward Moon's true identity and the reason for her trip to the outer world. Slowly, pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place. A whole world was unfolding before my eyes, and I was left sitting there with a book open to my favorite book, enjoying its suspense and mystery.
What I enjoyed most about this dark urban fantasy was that the serial killer was very literal. He literally brandished his brand, just as if he were branding anyone he caught. I felt for the victim of this sick twist of fate, since this type of violence is so often experienced in today's world. And if we look at Moon, who really suffers?
The plotline of Moon' s murder is complicated, but once the killer is caught, his twisted luck will run out as the plot thickens. However, some elements of the plot may be too intense for some readers. Some readers may find it disturbing to read about a little girl killing her own mother to get money to pay for an abusive boyfriend. If that is your preference, then this novel will definitely satisfy you.
What makes Moon' s haunted house different from other novels about haunted houses is that the entire premise of the story involves ghosts. Moon's ghost, Mo, works in the finance department of a bank, but he always seems to be searching for something. He follows a group of women who enjoy traveling and they often play pranks on each other. One night, Mo sneaks into their house and finds that their luggage is missing. They discover that it contains a powerful, curative, and very powerful ghost.
When Moon's ghost uses the powerful and curative power of his past life to open a door for her present life, she instantly realizes that her new life has no meaning without having experienced her previous life. This is a powerful message, because only by experiencing something in our life can we know what is important. Moon' s ghost is a reminder that we need to go back in time.
