The Avengers are a legendary fictional group of superheroes who first appeared in American comic books released by Marvel Comics in 1963. The Avengers were assembled to defeat the menace of the Red Skull, an evil villain who serves as a high-ranking member of the Avengers organization. The Avengers usually consist of five members, with two of them being female ( Reed Wiggler and Jean Grey) and one being a child. The team makes its first appearance in The Avengers #1, created by writer-owner Stan Lee and illustrator/co-writer Jack Kirby.
One of the primary characters in the Avengers comic is Quicksilver. This is so because of the fact that he possesses the mutant ability of healing immediately. However, he was presumed dead after attempting suicide in the first issue of The Avengers. He was later found frozen in ice by the Kree Chrull and the mantle of warden was given to him.
In the second issue of the series, The Avengers encountered a version of The Hulk, who was now known as Abomination. Abomination's features were somewhat different from the norm and he had red skin and pointed teeth. He also possessed great strength and was able to easily smash objects with his bare hands. After finding and freezing Abomination, The Avengers were able to take him to the Avengers Tower to be experimented with in order to find a cure for his virus that would leave him alive. However, the experiment was unsuccessful and Abomination was left disfigured.
The Avengers series has featured many more superheroes. Some of these include The Vision, who can generate extra sensory perception; The Antidermis, which gives the human body a hard body; and The Scarlet Witch, who is the only superhero of these series that has the power to control time. The Avengers also battle versions of supervillains such as The Mandarin, who has the ability to change into any animal and cause extreme mental or physical changes in humans; Kang the Conqueror, who is an evil villain who wants to rule the world using advanced technology; andVision and Wasp, who are twins who can fly. There have also been some crossover appearances between the Avengers and other popular superheroes. These include Spiderman and Wolverine and the X-Men.
