A long exposure is a method used by photographers to take photos that last for many days, and can really give you an incredible look. They also enable you to see more ideas about long exposure than just snapping the snapshot. Many people don't know how long exposure stands for in terms of the amount of time that a photo will last on the newspaper. That's because a newspaper is usually printed as soon as it was put in the news stand, so if you see a picture of something happening that happened a few months back, you'll see it on the news the next day or even a week or two later. But if you're standing in front of the camera trying to take a photograph, then chances are, your snapshot will be taken for the very moment it happens.
This time is referred to as a "transmission." A transmission lasts from a few seconds to about a minute at the most. Depending on the paper, a newspaper can get hundreds of exposures over just a few seconds. This gives photographers an amazing variety of different shots to choose from. It is possible to create a photograph with a great depth of field and still not capture everything in the frame when using this method.
So, how exactly does a photographer go about taking such beautiful pictures? One method of taking a good long exposure is to set the exposure meter to the long exposure mode. This will make the camera expose for as long as the shutter is held down. As you can imagine, this isn't going to give you a very large frame. However, if you have the right type of lens and shutter speed, this type of photograph can be made to look almost breathtaking.
Some photographers use a flash for this type of photograph. The flash works just like the camera would in the event of a long exposure. Instead of exposing for the entire duration of the exposure meter, the light is sent along with the image as it is blown across the film. This results in an extended exposure of the comic and a more vibrant color. However, the problem with this method is that too much light is usually brought into play and there is typically no contrast in the colors. This can be undesirable for photographers who prefer a photograph with some contrast.
Another technique that can be used is to use a studio flash to illuminate the subject so that the contrast can be created with the exposure meter. In this way, the camera is not exposed for the entire length of the frame, but only stays open long enough to expose the surrounding area where the subject is located. Although this does leave a small window of time during which the picture is exposed, it can create an amazing amount of contrast and lighting that gives the photo a striking look.
A long exposure on a comic page can be tough to pull off, especially if the panel is wide. To do this, many artists will use multiple cameras to make the frame shake as the image is blown across the top of the glass. It is important to remember to compose the panel as you would the cover of the comic. Keep in mind that any objects in the foreground will need to be closer to the camera than those in the background. If the background is too far away, the distant objects will be over-exposed and the picture will be flat looking.
Many photographers have also resorted to using an exposure meter as well. When using this device, the photographer inserts a key word or phrase in a comic so that the light coming from the comic matches the light coming from the exposure meter. Many professional photographers believe that this method is more effective than just shooting the scene with a normal exposure. If you are looking to take an exposure shot on your own, experiment with different light settings. Some photographers find that shooting with different light settings produces the best results.
These two techniques are all great ways to capture the incredible images found in comic books. However, if you are planning on using your exposure meter, I recommend that you do not rely solely on it to measure the light that is coming from your comic pages. I recommend that you use your camera as well. Shoot multiple photos using different settings. Choose which photo is the best and then evaluate it to see if your photo is actually worth the investment.
