Grendel Comic is a long running comic book series of comics originally produced in America by American writer Matt Wagner. First released by Comico, Wagner then went onto release of the series to Dark Horse, the now-dominant comic book publisher in the United States. The main character in the Grendel Comic series is Grendel, a powerful vampire who falls under the command of Dr. Dracula. He was an ally of Dr. Abraham Van Helsing during their battle against the vampires, but later turns against him and aids Count Dracula in his quest to kill the King of vampires.
The main strengths of the Grendel Comic are its distinctive look and the way it draws on the source material to create a highly unlikely hero. The comic's unique look owes a lot to Wagner's background as a comic artist, where he has used his imagination to create some truly wonderful designs. However, other than the look of the comic book, what have been the other major factors that have made Grendel Comic a hugely successful superhero genre-manga? There are many different factors that have combined to make Grendel Comic a hugely popular superhero genre-manga. Some of these factors are as follows:
The uniqueness of Grendel Comic as a superhero series is perhaps its greatest asset. This uniqueness makes Grendel Comic different from other superhero comics. Unlike most superheroes, the story in Grendel Comic is told in the first person perspective, and is told with a sort of humorous and quirky sense of humor. One of the biggest reasons why Grendel Comic has been a wildly successful superhero genre-manga is because of the uniqueness of its characters and the way it tells its story.
This uniqueness is also one of the main reasons why the adaptation of Grendel Comic was such a great idea. Adaptation of the comic series was done by screenwriters that worked on the project with a strong understanding of the source material. The film that finally came out was very successful in the comic book industry. The creative team behind the project included screenwriters Darvas Fodor and Brian Duffield, along with an all-star cast including Dexter McIlroy (Davion), Michael Chiklis (Robby), Christopher Walken (ymesis), and even guest stars such as Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Chad Wingnut), Halle Berry (Sue Beecher), and Rosemary Clooney (Nancy). It seems that adapting a successful comic into a blockbuster movie was more than worth the effort.
Just as unique is the comic's protagonist, Grendel, who is the head of a very organized crime family, the Gladers. Grendel also happens to be one of the most gifted children in his town. He is also a natural-born leader, having been raised by his father to be a police officer and to become a good man. With all this in mind, it's no surprise that the showrunners took their time building up this complex character. Originally, Grendel was supposed to be introduced in the pilot episode as a well-meaning but misguided father who attempted to teach his son how to be a vigilant leader.
The writers wanted to give viewers a realistic insight into what it was like to have a parent teach their own child how to be a vigilante. They wanted to create a positive image for Grendel as well, so the showrunners turned to an unlikely source: Michael Chiklis, a very gifted performer playing a well-intentioned but weak and sadistic character in the soap opera Weeds. Michael Chiklis brings Grendel to life, giving the character that rare combination of a father and a son. While it's true that Chiklis is not in his best acting form throughout the show, when he's doing his best Michael Chiklis impression, his face fills the screen. It's a winning combo that works well on television.
In the comic book adaptation, Grendel is introduced as an ambitious young artist living in Gotham City. Raised in poverty, he spends most of his days alone, drawing what he sees in the streets. Unbeknownst to his friends, Grendel has secretly trained himself to become the masked vigilante after he witnesses the murder of a mugger. However, when a mugger attacks his friendlies, Grendel can't help falling for the hoodlums' trick.
Following his tragic love experience with his girlfriend Mary Lou, Grendel vows to protect Gotham City. Using his newly enhanced skills for crime prevention, he becomes a very accomplished and well-known anti-hero. Batman's ally, Robin, along with Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, and The Green Hornet, join forces to stop crime in Gotham City. With the TV show's success, many movie adaptations of the comic books are on the way including the Dark Knight Rises and Fantastic Four.
